Great News for Swindon from Honda!
Was delighted to hear of the announcement of more jobs at Honda Swindon today. As the proud owner of a CR-V, I can tell you that they make excellent cars. Their fuel economy is very good and their record on carbon emissions is improving all the time. Honda’s commitment to continuing research and development augurs very well for the future.
This is an extract from a BBC News report:
“Japanese car giant Honda is creating an extra 700 jobs at its Swindon plant, taking the workforce to 4,900. Production will rise from 190,000 cars to 250,000 in 2007, as a result of “unprecedented” European demand for the Civic three and five door models.
A new Honda CR-V, being unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, will also be made at the site.
“We plan to increase output of both the CR-V and the Civic in our Swindon, UK plant from next spring, taking Swindon up to its full capacity of 250,000 units on a yearly basis, within 2007,” said Honda’s president and chief executive, Takeo Fukui.
An extra shift will be added at the Swindon plant, increasing efficiency, with most of the new jobs being in production.”

Yes, I’m a fan of Honda too, I have my second Honda Civic right now and it was largely assembled from recycled materials and is very economical.
I am most impressed by the choice of vehicle. Diesel is a remarkably effecient fuel which helps reduce the terrible effect of global waming. Only last week, I noticed that the duck pond water level had increased significantly. What are we to do? We should all follow your sterling example and purchase a good british vehicle.
I am also impressed with your very useful account of the funeral of one of my relatives. This article will no doubt be the subject of many deep discussions in local public hostelries around the the Swindon area. Well done Bob, for enlighteneing our lives and lifting the drudgery and monotony of our daily lives by filling us with delightful tales of the russian dynasties.
Anyway, I look forward to your next riveting article.

My Dear Count,
As someone who drives a Swedish people carrier, you should hang your head in shame. It is high time that you learnt to use capital letters.
Sincerely yours,
Robert Buckland
Bob
I wonder if you are able to help me out. Given the alarming increase in global warming, will this affect the treeline, and if so, will the loss of this forestation increase the carbon dioxide emissions produced by people who do not have the same commedable attitude as you towards the environment. The reason for my concern is whether or not such a decline in the treeline will affect the ability of landlubbers to maintain a Tortoise at such high levels. I wonder whether or not you may be interested in opening a Tortoise sanctuary in Swindon. There is little or no risk of the land becoming water logged by an increase in coastal tide levels, and it is also much closer to the equator, thereby allowing the tortoise to feel more at home. Also, by opening such a sanctuary you would show your credentials regarding preservation of rare and endangered species.
On the subject of the Honda, what is the current average mpg being achieved by this fine vehicle. (urban or combination cycle will suffice) Does it help if you purchase better quality fuel rather than supermarket fuel? Perhaps Ellee can help us out. She is now on her second CR-V – Come on Ellee, what’s the average mpg for your vehicle?
Anyway, I’m now off to rescue an large flock of migrating Lesser Spotted Plumber bats that took the wrong turn at Culverhouse Cross. The increase in solar radiation being allowed in through the large gap in the ozone layer has clearly affetcetd their internal navigation system.
Yours humbly
Count Boris
Dear Count,
Good to hear from you – it does seem that you are suitably chastened. My average mpg on the CR-V is about 36mpg, with highs of 43 on the motorway. I have found that I can get more mpg from the dearer diesel. All in all, this is a 4×4 that is not guzzling gas or producing excessive emissions.
Good luck with your attempt to locate plumbers – they can be damned elusive at this time of year.
Re tortoises – keeping them in captivity is sheer barbarism and I will have none of it. A sanctuary for oversized marine fish is more in line with my plans.
