A sunny day in Broadgreen
After a busy morning canvassing with one of our teams in Toothill, I went to the Broadgreen Community Centre for a community Cohesion Event organised by Broadstreet Area Community Council. One of the organisers is my friend and BACC member Kevin Leakey. As well as the events taking place in the main hall, a football competition was taking place out the back. It was the addition of a sporting event which guaranteed the attendance of so many young people from the local community. So popular was the football that more teams entered than expected, making it a very long event indeed! I was particularly impressed with the Goan team, whose strip resmbled the national colours of Sweden. The Police also fielded a rather talented outfit, who seemed to want to win matches, rather than diplomatically concede defeat!
The atmosphere was excellent, and all the community leaders I spoke to were full of praise for the event. The key to success in Broadgreen is the involvement of younger people. Sport and related activities will bring them in to events such as this – here’s to many more gatherings!
