Lost in the Post
November 20th, 2007A further blow has been dealt to this Government’s plans for a National Identity Card scheme and National Identity Register, by the loss of discs containing the personal details of everyone in receipt of Child Benefit in the UK. This includes me and my family. I am alarmed to learn that my bank details and other personal information is now out there somewhere, on two discs that I am told are password protected. If they were to fall into the wrong hands, who knows what could happen.
The BBC are carrying it as their lead story. Alistair Darling has made a Commons announcement and the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs has fallen on his sword…

Talking of Mr. Darling, his announcement about Northern Rock today has created more questions than answers. Isn’t it curious that there are now question marks over the actual capital value of the Company, when we were told some months ago that the problem was one of liquidity, rather than capital value. What on earth is going on here?
