Coming Out To Play
June 2nd, 2008Yesterday’s Green Action Day at Westlea Play Area was a great success - Dave Hunt, Swindon Council’s Play and Landscape Officer, was delighted with the turnout and with the response to his consultation roadshow. Residents, and particularly children, have the choice of several different options for Junior and Senior play areas. I could see that Dave had a large number of written replies, which I am sure will give everyone much food for thought!
The Council aim to make the renewal in September, which will probably mean the end of the road for the old slide and wooden pallisades that we have so lovingly painted and maintained on our three visits. It may well be that ROSPA will tell us that it is too dangerous. Whilst I raise a quizzical eyebrow at such an approach, the new play area will be modern, accessible and easily visible from the road. The old Toddlers’ play area, whose secluded setting has made it a focus for late night teen antics, will be removed and the area landscaped. Toddlers will be able to play immediately adjacent to their older brothers and sisters.
Inclusive play was on the agenda, and having spoken with Dave, I suggested a hard path leading directly to the play area that would be of real help. Many of the new attractions will allow children with all sorts of disabilities to play alongside other children, so I am encouraged.
Meanwhile, a team of helpers led by Cllrs Mary and Nick Martin plus me cleared up litter, recovered a bike from the pond and painted out graffiti. We were also joined by Swindon Mayor Cllr Steve Wakefield, who was key in organising the event. Steve was delighted with the positive response. My thanks to everyone who came along to help, and to all who are taking part in the consultation exercise. If you would like further information, e-mail Dave Hunt at dhunt@swindon.gov.uk
