Robert Buckland MP has welcomed the news that Swindon has been awarded £400,000 from the government’s Land Release Fund as part of a £45 million cash injection into key community projects.
The funding is in addition to the £11.5m cash boost awarded to Swindon from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund a few weeks ago.
The money will be used to redevelop the John Street car park in Swindon Town Centre.
Robert commented: “This will enrich a tired part of the town centre and will bring more housing, which is needed.”
Housing Minister Dominic Raab announced today that the funding, which has been awarded to local councils across the country, will be used to support building strong communities and help local councils to meet their ambition to unlock enough of land they own for at least 160,000 homes by 2020. He commented: “We are investing £45 million to build roads and provide utilities, so councils can release the land to get up to 7,280 new homes built.
“It’s part of our strategy to build the homes Britain needs, and carry local communities with us.
“We’re determined to make buying or renting more affordable for young families and those on low or middle incomes.
